Obituary for Mary Katherine Sauder

Mary Katherine (Mary Kay) Sauder, 87, lifetime resident of Lancaster County, on Friday, January 26, 2018, joined her parents, Earl and Alice Sauder, in heaven.

Mary Kay earned a master’s degree in nursing from Vanderbilt University. She was in the first graduating class of Goshen College School of Nursing. She also graduated from Ephrata High School. After becoming an RN she worked at Lancaster General Hospital, retiring as assistant director of nursing to care for her parents.

In addition to being an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Akron, she served on the boards of Luther Acres and Nurses Christian Fellowship. Mary Kay also loved traveling and took frequent trips to destinations around the globe.

Mary Kay is survived by her sister, Arlene Piepgrass of Lancaster, her nephew William Piepgrass, husband of Marcia Piepgrass, of Lancaster; and her two nieces, Rebecca Cooke, wife of Jim Cooke of McLean, Virginia, and Mary Alice Patterson, wife of Robert Patterson of Haddonfield, New Jersey. Mary Kay was unusually close to her nieces and nephew as well as their children, taking them on trips and enjoying sports with them.

Also surviving are nine great-nieces and great-nephews: Stephen Piepgrass, married to Candace Piepgrass of Richmond, Virginia; Anna Cave, married to Marcus Cave of Bethesda, Maryland; Rachel Petersen, married to Curt Petersen, of Leawood, Kansas; Alex Cooke, married to Julia Cooke, of Arlington, Virginia; Ryan Cooke of New York, New York; Emily Budd, married to Joseph Budd, of Raleigh, North Carolina; Michael Patterson, married to Stacy Patterson, of New York, New York; Jonathan Patterson, of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Megan Patterson of New York, New York. Miss Sauder was also survived by her great- nieces’ and great-nephews’ thirteen children.

A memorial service will be held at Zion Lutheran Church, 435 Main Street, Akron on Saturday, February 3, 2018 at 2 p.m. The family will receive friends prior to the service at 1:30 p.m. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family.
