Robert N. Means, age 70, died Friday, February 9 unexpectedly from natural causes. He was born in Columbia, PA, the only child of the late June and Marvin Means and enjoyed 46 years of marriage to his beloved wife, Susan Means. He graduated from Columbia High School in 1965 and Elizabethtown College in 1969. where he majored in Business Administration and played on the basketball team. After college he played for the Lancaster YMCA Big Five, highlighted by a national championship and a month long tour of Australia. He worked for Bash Jewelers for thirty-five years.
Bob lived a simple life; his idea of a perfect day would be spending time at home with his wife watching DVR, reading a book, or playing cards. When he wasn’t at home, you could find him participating in one of two monthly card clubs with friends, or on a sideline cheering on the Cocalico Eagles. He took great joy in continuing to follow all Cocalico sports long after his children moved onto competing at the collegiate level. He also took pride in rooting for the football team of Oxford High School, where his son is the head coach, the Green Bay Packers and the New York Yankees. Bob was a wealth of knowledge, spending many hours watching sports and reading the sports page. He was also an active member of Faith United Evangelical Lutheran Church in Denver, PA, where he particularly enjoyed volunteering for Peter’s Porch.
One thing that anyone close to Bob can attest to is that he would give all of himself to help his friends and family in times of need. You could call him anytime, day or night, and he would drop everything to help out a friend.
Most important to Bob was his family; he loved spending time with his three grandchildren, Braeden and Brody Means and Lily Leach. He took tremendous pride in his children and their spouses, Michael and Kristin Means and Abby and David Leach.
He will be remembered for his enormous heart, his sense of humor, and his genuine love and concern for his family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at Faith United Evangelical Lutheran Church, 357 Walnut Street, Denver, PA 17517 on Saturday, February 17, 2018. The family will receive visitors starting at 10:00 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. Kindly omit flowers. Contributions can be made in Bob’s memory to Faith United Evangelical Lutheran Church.
